World Cup: President Trump Hosts FIFA’s President Gianni Infantino

Posted by: New Americans Magazine , March 12, 2025

By Okon Ekpenyong

President Donald Trump recently signed an executive order to create a White House Task Force in anticipation of the highly awaited FIFA World Cup 2026, which the United States, Canada, and Mexico will jointly host.

Gianni Infantino, the International Football Association President (FIFA), stood beside him and stated, “It is a significant achievement that the United States, along with Mexico and Canada, are hosting the next Men’s World Cup. Additionally, this summer, we will have a new competition called the FIFA Club World Cup in 11 to 12 cities across the United States from June 14 to July 13.

FIFA President predicts that the economic impact of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup and 2026 World Cup will be significant—generating approximately $40 billion from now until next year. The breakdown certainly put a smile on President Trump’s face. Additionally, between this year’s event and next year’s World Cup, FIFA says the preparation will help create over 200,000 jobs. Many stadiums hosting these games will make updates and innovations to the stadiums before the games.

With the increasing tension between the United States, Canada, and Mexico, one reporter asked how this preparation would work. President Trump responded that it would make things a bit more exciting and that tension is a positive thing.

The FIFA President also unveiled the design of the FIFA Club Cup in the Whitehouse, and Trump, standing beside him, saying, “This is priceless. I can demonstrate that this trophy is unique but not finished yet. It is unlike any other trophy because it comes with a key. There is no other sports trophy like this one.”

Infantino previously released a video showcasing what the trophy will look like on November 14, 2024. He stated, “It is both prestigious and timeless—a golden trophy that symbolizes the future while being inspired by the past. The team that lifts this trophy will hold the world of club football in their hands.”

FIFA President Infantino outlines the elements of the trophy, which features iconic visuals and symbols that embody the rich history and traditions of football. The trophy also showcases a world map, the names of all FIFA Member Associations, and even the solar system’s configuration on the date of the tournament’s opening match in June 2025.

Infantino further states that any team that claims the esteemed trophy should regard it as a momentous accomplishment, urging players to present it to the world and celebrate it as the beginning of a new chapter in football. The path to the title will kick off with the Official Draw on December 5, 2024, in Miami, where the top 32 clubs globally will vie in 63 matches held across 12 amazing venues throughout the United States. The tournament is ready to #TakeItToTheWorld, highlighting the finest football globally.

The United States is preparing to host its second World Cup; the first was in 1994. According to the United Soccer website, that event was the most successful FIFA World Cup in history in terms of attendance and revenue.

The average attendance for the 52 matches was around 68,991, contributing to a total attendance of over 3.5 million (3,587,538). Next year will mark 31 years since the United States last hosted a World Cup, and attendance numbers could be even higher.

The Trump administration states that this initiative is designed to ensure the safety of the event, support economic growth across the nation, and showcase the benefits of hosting such an event in America for local, state, and national businesses. Additionally, next year’s World Cup will coincide with the 250th anniversary of the United States.

The President will lead the task force as the chair, while Vice-President JD Vance will be the second-in-command, per a white house report. Together, they will oversee the preparations for the World Cup. They will also work alongside federal agencies in the host cities to prioritize safety, providing all involved a sense of reassurance and security.

Every four years, the world attends or gathers around their television screens to watch the FIFA World Cup. It certainly attracts a larger audience than any other athletic event globally. This surge in visitors not only stimulates local economies but also contributes to infrastructure growth and generates a variety of job opportunities. Sixteen stadiums in sixteen cities across three countries will host the games.

Theld brings significant economic benefits to these regions and creates jobs in various sectors, from hospitality to construction.

MetLife Stadium, located in East Rutherford, New Jersey, will be one of 11 venues across the United States hosting games. Another stadium is AT&T Stadium in Arlington, home of the Dallas Cowboys. Geha Field at Arrowhead Stadium, which hosts the Kansas City Chiefs, will also be one of the match locations. In addition, Lumen Field, home of the Seattle Seahawks, and Levi’s Stadium, where the San Francisco 49ers play, will serve as venues. The stadium for the New England Patriots in Foxborough, Massachusetts, along with Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, home of the Miami Dolphins, will also participate as host sites.

Additionally, two locations in Canada will participate: BC Place in Vancouver and BMO Field in Toronto. Three stadiums in Mexico are also scheduled to host games: Estadio BBVA in Monterrey, Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, and Estadio Akron in Guadalajara, which will host the remaining games. The cities of Houston, Los Angeles, Atlanta (site of the 1996 Summer Olympics), and Philadelphia will be involved as well.

The task force anticipates that the host cities could see roughly 450,000 visitors. And revenue for those matches in those 11 stadiums could be more than $480 million. Also, the host cities and states will make a few infrastructural improvements to help show the beauty of their city, eventually help draw more visitors, and help attract more events to the area.

This notable improvement in local economies highlights the advantages of hosting such a significant event, fostering a sense of hope and optimism for the future. “This initiative is in line with President Trump’s broader economic plan by harnessing global attention to draw in foreign investments and boost America’s status as a leading destination for sports and tourism,” stated a report from the White House. The global attention on this event is a testament to its international significance and the pride it brings to the nation.

During President Bill Clinton’s administration in 1994, various reports suggest that no evidence of a White House Task Force existed. However, the administration did work with FIFA and the United States Soccer Federation to work closely with host cities and their local and state authorities to ensure everyone’s safety and to facilitate the smooth progress of the tournament.

Tourism

President Trump intends to attract more international and Fortune 500 companies to start or expand their operations in the United States, and forming a task force is one of the ways to create such opportunities, especially given the global spotlight.

Since the United States is a melting pot for immigrants, those living here, whether first or second-generation immigrants, the sport remains their first love, and there are enthusiastic football fans. When English Premier League teams compete in U.S. stadiums, it unites football supporters nationwide. Moreover, the World Cup will showcase and celebrate American achievements, positioning the United States as an outstanding venue for major sporting events.

Although soccer does not rank as the top sport in the United States— that distinction belongs to American football— the Men’s World Cup, like the final in 2022, drew around 1.5 billion viewers, whereas the Super Bowl attracted about 264 million viewers, with over 200 million of those viewers being from American households, according to various sources. While Major League Soccer exists in the U.S., its national soccer team competes in the Confederation of North, Central America, and Caribbean Association Football, established in 1963 and headquartered in Miami, Florida.
