Chevron sponsors the full marathon, while Aramco sponsors the Half, and in both races, over 27,000 runners signed up for it. What makes the Houston Marathon captivating is its enthusiastic volunteers and half-million supportive spectators, solidifying its status as the largest single-day sporting event in the vibrant city of Houston.
In 2024, race organizers proudly stated that they did surpass their goal of raising over $36 million for the Run for a Reason Charity Program, which supports local charities in Houston, like Texas Children’s Hospital. As excitement builds for the 53rd annual event, ambitious plans are in place to triple this fundraising total, generating a buzz of anticipation and optimism for what lies ahead.
In the 2024 Marathon, Zouhair Talbi, a Moroccan-American runner, and Rahma Tusa, hailing from Ethiopia, etched their names in the event’s record books with remarkable finishing times of 2:06:36 and 2:19:33 in the men’s and women’s full marathon, respectively. The outstanding achievement marked their inaugural victories at the Houston Marathon and highlighted the event’s global reach and commitment to inclusivity among elite athletes worldwide.
Ethiopia’s dominance in the recent Half-Marathon series is impressive, as the last five male champions have all come from this East African nation. The latest victor, Jemal Mekonen, was crowned in the previous year, closely followed by notable athletes Leul Gebresilase in 2022 and Milkesa Mengesha in 2021. Among the women, last year’s race featured Sutume Kebed finishing as the first runner-up, with another Ethiopian star, Hiwot Gebremaryan, seizing an impressive second-place finish.
For the spectators, seeing a global runner like Edna Kiplagat, a remarkable marathon champion with five prestigious wins, including the New York, London, and Boston marathons, taking part in the 52nd Houston Marathon was a true come true for many. Although she finished in sixth place, this runner truly helped capture the beauty of Houston’s Marathon, which continues to make a global impact. Such an elite runner always electrified the atmosphere, allowing each race to draw in more spectators eager to witness some of the world’s top elite runners competing head-to-head.
As runners gear up for the big day, the anticipation is palpable. They hope the weather will not be so bad. Well, historically, the Houston Marathon has seen a mix of weather conditions over the past 13 years; temperatures have ranged from a low of 28°F (-2°C) in 2010 to a high of 75°F (24°C) in 2017. However, this year’s forecast looks promising, with conditions similar to those in 2022, when temperatures ranged from 33°F (1°C) to 56°F (13°C).
In recent years, Ethiopian and Kenyan athletes have consistently performed well in the past Houston Marathon, but could another runner from another country take the reign in this year’s field? With a talented lineup of runners, including past champions and Olympic medalists, this year’s athletes will push themselves to their limits, making for an exciting and competitive race.
Individuals engage in running for various reasons. Some pursue it for recreational enjoyment, setting long-term goals like participating in their first marathon. Others focus on enhancing their performance by striving to improve their finishing times.
The Houston Marathon does have a reputation for being one of the fastest courses in the world because it has a flat and scenic route that takes runners through the city’s downtown area and surrounding neighborhoods.
