In the second and third week in December, American Airlines partnered with the Gary Sinise Foundation this holiday season to make Disney’s dreams come true for over 2,500 family members of fallen military heroes and first responders. As part of the foundation’s Snowball Express program, families from around the world gathered in Orlando, Florida, for an all-expenses-paid, week-long vacation at Walt Disney World Resort.
Over two weeks in December, the event aimed to provide hope, healing, and camaraderie to those who have lost loved ones in service. The first week welcomed over 1,700 children and surviving spouses/guardians of fallen military heroes, while the second week honored over 1,000 children and their surviving parents/guardians of fallen first responders.
But who is Gary Sinise, the man behind the foundation? Most people may remember Gary Sinise as a renowned American actor, playing iconic roles in movies like “Forrest Gump,” “Apollo 13,” and “CSI: NY.” But beyond the screen, he’s been a longtime advocate for veterans and first responders; Sinise has dedicated himself to supporting those who serve and their families.
According to the foundation website, in 2011, the Actor founded the Gary Sinise Foundation, a nonprofit organization committed to honoring and supporting veterans, first responders, and their families. Through initiatives like Snowball Express, the foundation provides critical support and resources to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
“American Airlines played a crucial role in making the Snowball Express event successful, with over 1,000 team members volunteering at 90 airports and on 17 charter aircraft. The airline’s efforts included gate-side ceremonies and themed inflight experiences designed to create a magical and memorable journey for the participating families”, according to the airline website.
One notable volunteer was Captain Keith Firmin, American Airlines’ Chief Pilot, who flew on a Snowball Express flight departing from Washington, D.C. A volunteer firefighter with years of service, Firmin has dedicated his career in aviation and first response to giving back to others, including participating in Honor Flights and Snowball Express.
During the event, families had the chance to participate in various activities, such as the Walk of Gratitude, where they were honored with applause and cheers from Disney cast members, volunteers, and the Reedy Creek Fire Department. They also visited Cinderella’s Castle, which allowed thr families to send messages of love and remembrance to their fallen loved ones with the help of Disney magic.
This annual Gary Sinise Foundation’s Snowball Express event continues to honor the families of fallen heroes, providing them with a chance to heal, connect, and create lasting memories. American Airlines’ partnership with the foundation demonstrates the airline’s commitment to giving back to the community and supporting those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
As the foundation stated, “At our Snowball Express annual event, a day at the park offers more than just fun – it creates lasting bonds between families on the same healing journey. For our families of fallen heroes, this experience is much more than rides – it’s about healing, laughter, and finding comfort in one another. Their joy reaffirms our mission and reminds us of the strength in community.”
