The Ohio New African Immigrants Commission (ONAIC) has appointed Ibrahima Sow as its first Executive Director.
“A U.S. citizen originally from Senegal, Ibrahima is a resolute advocate for African immigrants, bringing experience and a sharp vision for empowering Ohio’s African communities,” said Abass Bangura, Chair, Board of Commissioners.
In his prior role as a commissioner on the ONAIC board, Ibrahima played a pivotal role in shaping the commission’s mission and objectives. He is a graduate of Ohio State University and Ashland University and is currently pursuing a doctorate in education at Franklin University, underscoring his commitment to community leadership and lifelong learning.
As Executive Director, Ibrahima will focus on establishing the commission’s office, building a robust outreach infrastructure, and creating a statewide network to support African immigrants throughout Ohio.
His work will be anchored in the commission’s legislative mandates, emphasizing advocacy, resources, and community integration.
Based in Columbus, Ibrahima lives with his wife, twin sons, and their 8-month-old daughter and is eager to foster a keen sense of belonging and community for immigrants across the state.
“I am honored to take on this role and to collaborate with our vibrant immigrant communities,” Ibrahima said.
“Together, we will create pathways for engagement, support, and empowerment, ensuring that every sub-Saharan African immigrant in Ohio has the opportunity to thrive.”
Established by Ohio’s 127th General Assembly, the Ohio New African Immigrants Commission advises and advocates for the self-sufficiency of Ohio’s sub-Saharan African residents. Serving over 100,000 individuals across more than 40 Ohio counties, ONAIC is guided by its commitment to advocacy, connection, and community impact.
