In a historical development, Ban Tien, a seasoned veteran of law enforcement, officially assumed the role of Chief of the METRO Police Department in Houston, Texas. Tien’s appointment is particularly noteworthy, as he becomes the first Asian-American to lead the department.
Having joined the Houston Police Department in 1997, Tien has consistently shown exceptional leadership and commitment, ultimately rising to the position of Executive Assistant Chief of Police.
His impressive background also includes service as a Special Agent with the United States Drug Enforcement Administration and proudly serviced in the U.S. Army and Army Reserve for 32 years, with combat in tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.
As the highest-ranking Asian-American in the department’s history, Tien’s promotion signals a significant step toward enhancing diversity and representation within law enforcement leadership. He will succeed Vera Bumpers, who has served as the METRO Chief of Police since 2014. Chief Bumpers’ tenure saw considerable progress, and Tien aims to continue advancing her legacy.
