In an inspiring turn of events during the pivotal 2024 election season, eight Nigerian Americans celebrated their victories, marking a transformative leap in minority representation within U.S. politics. This election cycle was particularly historic, highlighted by the groundbreaking candidacy of the first African American woman to run for President in a general election. With several New American candidates clinching their victories, these achievements resonate more profoundly than ever.
Dr. Oye Owolewa, a licensed pharmacist with remarkable perseverance, leads the charge. He has been re-elected as a shadow member of the U.S. House of Representatives for the District of Columbia’s at-large District, a critical position given the District’s lack of full congressional voting rights. While shadow members can’t participate in regular Congress sessions, they tirelessly advocate for the District’s District’s recognition and push for full statehood. Dr. Owolewa’s journey, having begun with his election in 2020 and continuing through subsequent re-elections in 2022 and 2024, serves as a beacon of determination for many.
Kelechi “KC” Ohaebosim, a dedicated public servant, has made significant strides as a Kansas House of Representatives member for the 89th District since 2017. His unwavering commitment has led to transformative changes that benefit his community.
Janelle Anyanonu, whose roots trace back to a Nigerian immigrant family, took her oath of office in 2023 as a member of the New Mexico House of Representatives for the 19th District. Her journey from Albuquerque to the state legislature is inspiring, as a relatable narrative for countless individuals with similar aspirations.
Carol Kazeem, hailing from Chester, Pennsylvania, has been making waves in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for District 159 since 2022. Representing a diverse array of communities, she has become a vital voice for the people in her District.
Ester Agbaje, the dedicated representative for Minnesota’s District 59B since 2021, has emerged as a committed advocate for public safety and criminal justice reform. She has championed the CROWN Act to protect Minnesotans from hairstyle discrimination and has worked ardently for housing and tenants’ rights. As an alumna of prestigious institutions like George Washington University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Harvard Law School, her influence is far-reaching.
Georgia State Representative Segun Adeyina has been actively serving the 110th District since 2023. With dual citizenship in Nigeria and the U.S., he brings a unique perspective to his role, backed by an education from the University of Akron in Ohio.
In Gwinnett County, Georgia, Representative Gabe Okoye has been representing District 102 since 2023 while also serving as the county’s planning commissioner—an essential role in shaping the community’s future.
Solomon Adesanya, who has served the 43rd District of Georgia in the House of Representatives since 2023, brings a wealth of experience from his life between Nigeria and the United States. With a master’s degree in Public Policy and ownership of two restaurants, he is fiercely dedicated to nurturing small businesses.
Lastly, Phil Olaleye, a forceful advocate in the Georgia House of Representatives for the 59th District since 2023, combines his academic achievements—earning a degree from Duke University and graduating from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government—with a passion for empowering foster families, building healthier communities, strengthening democracy, and promoting affordable housing.
Together, these trailblazers are shaping legislation and inspiring future generations of leaders to rise and make their voices heard.
