The state of Ohio took center stage on the national political scene on Tuesday, November 5, 2024 as former President Donald Trump was declared the winner of the 2024 Presidential election. Trump, who previously served as the 45th president, will now serve a second term in the White House as 47th president after defeating Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump’s running mate and vice-president-elect is Ohio US Senator JD Vance.
But the surprises didn’t end there. Bernie Moreno, a Republican candidate, also made headlines by defeating Democrat incumbent US Senator Sherrod Brown and helping the Republicans gain control of the US Senate. This marks a significant shift in power in the country’s legislative branch. Brown was running for his fourth term after taking office in 2007.
Trump won Ohio by a margin of 52.2%, receiving 311,6579 votes. Per an Associated Press report, issues that contributed to the triumph of Trump/Vance and Moreno were the economy (41%), immigration (21%), abortion (11%), healthcare (8%), and climate (5%).
With Republicans controlling the Senate and the presidency, this provides a favorable environment for the President to push through their agenda and policies. Trump’s win in the 2024 election comes after a highly contested re-election bid in 2020, where he lost to President Joe Biden. However, history is on Trump’s side as he becomes the second president to win a non-consecutive White House election. The first was Democrat president Grover Cleveland, who served as the 22nd and 24th President. Trump won Ohio for the third time in 2016, 2020, and now in 2024.
Trump’s massive win in crucial battleground states such as Pennsylvania, Georgia, and North Carolina helped propel him to victory. He also picked up a vital win in Wisconsin, bringing his electoral votes to 277. The race in Nevada, Arizona, and Michigan is still too close to call.
As Trump prepares to take on a second term in the White House, the country eagerly awaits what changes and developments his administration will bring. With a Republican-controlled Senate, Trump will likely have more support in implementing his policies and agenda. Only time will tell what the future holds for the United States under the leadership of President Trump.
Bernie Moreno’s victory and JD Vance’s becoming Trump’s next vice president have catapulted Ohio to the national spotlight, significantly boosting the state’s influence. With two senators from Ohio, the state gains substantial leverage in shaping policy and decision-making processes.
Benefits of Having Two Senators from Ohio
- Increased Representation: Ohio’s interests are now more prominently represented at the federal level.
- Legislative Clout: The state’s senators can collaborate to push through legislation beneficial to Ohio.
- Economic Benefits: This increased influence can attract investments, jobs, and federal funding to the state.
Historically, Ohio has been a breeding ground for vice presidents, with three individuals holding the office, including Charles Fairbanks, Thomas A Hendricks, and Charles Dawes. Regarding JD Vance’s potential presidential run in 2028, it’s difficult to predict. However, his upcoming vice president role will provide valuable exposure and experience. Factors influencing his changes include:
- Performance as Vice President: Vance’s effectiveness in his role will impact his reputation and viability.
- National Sentiment: The country’s mood and priorities in 2028 will significantly influence the election.
- Primary Competition: Vance will face stiff competition from other Republican candidates.
Only time will tell if Vance will capitalize on his current momentum and successfully navigate the complex landscape of presidential politics.
