On October 5, 2024, Community Refugee & Immigrant Services (CRIS) held its 11th Annual 5K Run at Genoa Park in Downtown Columbus, promoting unity and solidarity with refugees and immigrants.
Celebration of Diversity

The event brought together 500+ participants from over 25 nationalities, celebrating cultural diversity along the scenic Scioto River. A DJ-curated playlist featuring international music and local sponsors, including Big Lots Foundation and Ohio State University Medical Center, contributed to the event’s success.
Mission
As a resettlement program, CRIS provides resources and services, such as job placement, language classes, and cultural orientation, to refugees in Central Ohio. In recent years, CRIS has assisted over 5,000 refugees, with 90% of refugee children now enrolled in local schools.

Cris’ 5K run may have been a fundraising opportunity. However, it also allowed people to come together and celebrate the strength and diversity of the community. October 1st marked the beginning of a new fiscal year for CRIS’ Resettlement Program, which welcomed 788 refugees to Central Ohio between October 2023 and September 2024.
Success Stories
A Ukrainian family shared their success story, highlighting improved school performance and contributions to the local economy. A Haitian refugee credited CRIS’s language program for finding employment and giving back through volunteering.
Community Impact
The 5K run demonstrated community spirit, inspiring unity and advocacy. Lauren Cates, CRIS communication coordinator, emphasized the importance of refugees and immigrants in strengthening the community.

Event Success
Virtual options and donations allowed widespread participation. The event’s success is attributed to volunteers’ dedication and hard work, raising awareness about CRIS’s resources.
The 2024 CRIS 5K Run was a heartwarming display of community support, celebrating diversity and resilience.
