The Liberians in Columbus Incorporated (LICI) has commenced its Independence Day celebration in honor of Liberia’s 177th Independence. Saturday, July 20, 2024 thousands of Liberians residing in Columbus, Ohio will gather at Naftzger Park to celebrate the rich culture, history, and heritage of Liberia.
This year also marks the 38th anniversary of LICI, the umbrella organization representing all Liberian organizations in Columbus, highlighting its significant impact over the years.
The festival promises a colorful array of activities, including food and artisanal vendors, a dedicated kids’ space, and a Community Grand March at 3 PM. Sports enthusiasts can look forward to the IE & Barroll Soccer and Kickball Tournament, while health and wellness are spotlighted with a mobile clinic and mental health resources provided by ADMHS. Additionally, community partners will showcase their contributions, strengthening a sense of unity and support.
As day turns to night, the festivities continue with an all-white party organized by DJ EZ, one of Liberia’s top DJs in Columbus. This event is set to bring the community together in a lively celebration Liberian Entertainment.
Meanwhile, on July 26, Liberians will gather at the Ohio Statehouse for the ceremonial raising of the Liberian flag in honor of its Independence day; Liberia gained independence in 1847.
The day’s events include a government office proclamation, a performance by the LICI Summer Scholar Academy, a traditional drum call, and a community message. The celebration will end with refreshments at the Liberian Community Center.
Moreover, that evening, a highly anticipated concert featuring JZyNo, one of AfroBeats’ biggest artists from Liberia, will be held. Known for his hit song “Butter My Bread” featuring Ghanaian artist Lasmid, JZyNo is expected to draw a large crowd. Concert tickets range from $30 to $350 and include performances by other artists, dancers, a youth 18+ inclusion segment, a VIP area, a photo booth, and a local artist showcase. The celebrations continue on July 27 with a Gala and Fundraising Dinner. Highlights include Lifetime Achievement and Community Champion Awards to community members and leaders who have been impactful in the community, another performance by the LICI Summer Scholar Academy, a fashion and cultural exchange, a Liberian food showcase, a silent auction, and fundraising for community building and programming.
The evening will end with a drum call, dancing, networking, and fun, with prizes for the best-dressed attendees.
